Thomas Cooper's jewelry career started in high school as a part time retail jewelry salesman. That experience inspired Thomas to move to New York City to study jewelry design at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Thomas was the recipient of the prestigious Van Cleef & Arpels Graduating Design Award. "My first job after graduation was working as a designer for a well-known manufacture of high-end fine jewelry. I realized immediately that working as a designer without the experience of working at the bench would make me less competitive later in my career. I searched for and found a platinum shop willing to take me on as an apprentice. In 1986 Thomas struck out on his own operating out of the corner of his bedroom in New York City.
