That experience inspired Thomas to move to New York City to study jewelry design at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Thomas was the recipient of the prestigious Van Cleef & Arpels Graduating Design Award. "My first job after graduation was working as a designer for a well-known manufacture of high-end fine jewelry. I realized immediately that working as a designer without the experience of working at the bench would make me less competitive later in my career. I searched for and found a platinum shop willing to take me on as an apprentice.
